Omega 3

While we all know that our canines will benefit from the addition of Omega 3’s in their diet, what are some other ways of providing the essential fatty acids? Not all dogs like the smell or taste of fish or salmon oil. Another smart way of boosting your dog’s immune system with Omega’s is the addition of Flaxseed oil. Flaxseed is grown throughout the world, but primarily prevails in the northern United States and Canada. Flaxseed is safe for consumption by all members of your family. When providing it to your canine however, note to provide it either in liquid or ground form. The seeds themselves will pass through the dog’s digestive tract and he will gain no benefit from the seeds in solid form.

What are some of the benefits of adding Flaxseed oil to your dog’s diet? Omega 3 acids are best known for their ability to help the heart. By lowering bad and boosting good cholesterol, Flaxseed oil can help prevent high blood pressure. The oil has also proven beneficial when used as an anti-inflammatory and can aid some of our older pups if suffering from arthritis. The regular intake of Flaxseed oil as a supplement will give an added boost to your canine’s immune system and has been found to be quite favorable in the treatment of dogs with cancer. As taking the oil is an enhancement to the immune system, your dog can fight free radicals and thus produce more healthy cells. Flaxseed oil is also great in keeping your canine’s coat and skin healthy and vibrant. Since Flaxseed oil is quite high in fiber, it can be used as a remedy for constipation or if used regularly, can prevent constipation from even being an issue. Recommended dosage: one teaspoon for small dogs (10 to 25 lbs.); 2 teaspoons for medium dogs (25-45 lbs.); and 1 tablespoon for large dogs (45-80 lbs).
